A Look Back at 2018 at the Sicamous Summer Stomp Part 1 Season 6 Episode 8 Segment 1

Season 6 Episode 8 Segment 1
Sicamous Summer Stomp Part 1

Ride Like a Local spoke with Steve Hammer, one of the event co-organizers.  Steve started with the Sicamous Summer Stomp in 1994.

This year they had 14 bands booked for the event.  Darby Mills, formerly of the headpins, was one of the performers.  Darby is also a co-organizer and has a voice that can rock!

All original 6 members  have since retired, however, Howard Halek came out of retirement and the proud age of 74 to light the night time bonfire.

So many amazing sponsors make the event happen.  Pubs and distilleries small and large all come together to help with the event.  Twin Anchor Structures has been a major sponsor.  Warner Rentals powers the campground and in return sends a very small bill.

In 29 years The Sicamous Summer Stomp has raised well over 1/4 million dollars just in cash donations alone.  The economic benefits to the community are estimated over 2 million.  All together they believe it is somewhere around 50 to 70 million raised!!

For the 30th year they will be scaling back and going old school.  They will have bike days with in the community with a family day as well.  A great party will still be had at the campgrounds at the end of the night.

All in all it is a great weekend to get together with like minded individuals and have a great time.

If you are blessed enough to live where you can be riding today, please remember to ride like everyone around you is blind and can not see you.

Motorcycle Helmets, the Science, the Myths and Equality

Motorcycle Awareness Month is upon us and I’d like to put some focus on helmets.

Motorcycle Helmets, the Science, the Myths and Equality:
Let’s face it, helmets have been a contentious issue for years now and they inspire many viewpoints and opinions.

These days, here in Canada, the issue has become even more contentious to the point of civil liberty/disobedience rallies, supreme court challenges and the like.

Here is the link to the Civil Disobedience Rally:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/440010909841458/

And the Equal Rights Association:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/279518259433520/

We have a religious group of people who want to have the privilege of riding a motorcycle without the burden of protecting the public purse, the way the rest of us do.

These riders are using their religion to avoid wearing a helmet and we have governments allowing these exemptions to take place.

In BC, they lost their right to wear a beanie for all other riders in 2012.
Sikhs in that province won the right to ride with only a Turban on in 2009.

In spite of all of the science and stats that was used by the government in BC to remove freedoms from non Sikhs when the decision to withdraw the beanie allowance was made, Manitoba, Alberta and Ontario all allow this helmet exemption.

When you think of the shipping docks and the insurance regulations surrounding helmets in the workplace, no one there, no matter their faith is allowed to work without a helmet. The companies refuse to pay the premiums and costs for head injuries to those not wearing certified protective gear.

If public purse and public safety are being cited as the reasons that the beanie is no longer acceptable safety gear by the now defunct Synaptic Analysis Consulting Group that called themselves experts in injury and bio-mechanics, then WHY would government allow this exemption to take place for Sikhs?

If you believe the science and reasoning they used in 2012 when the right to ride wearing a beanie was revoked: “In a 2009 study, Mr. Richards conducted crash tests comparing "very severe collisions" with different helmets, and found the risk of a severe brain injury – one with a high probability of death – with a beanie helmet was more than 90 per cent. With a certified, full face-shield helmet, that probability dropped to less than 5 per cent.”
Yet no one has tested the turban and its efficiency.
Why?

I suspect it is because it’s a religious garment.

I wanted to learn about the Turban and its significance so I went to the World Sikh dot Org site (http://www.worldsikh.org/what_is_the_significance_of_the_turban).

“There are various styles and sizes of turban. Younger children often wear a patka which is a square piece of cloth tied on the head. At home or for sleep, a smaller turban or keski is worn in place of the larger turban.  Depending on personal preference, wearers choose different colours or fabrics for the turban. “

Now, if riding a motorcycle or driving a car is considered a privilege and not a right, then why are religious rights being flexed here at all?

I simply do not understand that, especially when they have the option to wear a smaller turban so that they may wear a helmet.

It’s an inequality that has no place in Canadian society and yet, here we are.
But the politics surrounding helmets don’t end with the whole “Let those who ride decide” debate or the whole equality debate around a privilege...
No, many question whether or not helmets save lives, reduce trauma etc. or might actually cause more injury in some cases.

When you go to the CDC website in the US, their stats are pretty convincing that :

  • Helmets saved an estimated 1,859 lives in 2016.1
  • If all motorcyclists would have worn helmets in 2016, 802 more could have been saved. 1
  • Each year, the United States could save more than $ 1 billion in economic costs if all motorcyclists wore helmets.2
  • Helmets reduce the risk of death by 37%.2
  • Helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 69%.3,4

If you use the links in the references you will be taken to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. https://www.iihs.org/iihs/topics/t/motorcycles/fatalityfacts/motorcycles

You’ll note that as with all stats, they only tell a narrow sliver of what actually happened.
But they point to head trauma being present in those who are fatally injured.
That is one stat that no one can really dispute.

Here is the statement that I like - “Helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.”

So the answer is do they work?
Well yes, for certain kinds of crashes they do. Do they work all the time?
No. There is no perfect device for protecting one's noggin.

For more information on helmets and the health care cost reductions and the lives saved,
visit https://saferoads.org/issues/motorcycle-helmets/

As far as helmets increasing the chance of neck injury, the science seems to disprove that theory, however, there also doesn’t appear to be a variety of researchers working on the topic either. (https://msf-usa.org/downloads/imsc2013/Oct17_Session2-Thom_Ouellet_Smith_Hurt-Helmets_and_Neck_Injuries_in_Fatal_Motorcycle_Crashes_PAPER.pdf)

My biggest question out of the whole helmet debate is this:

With all of this supposed science at their fingertips, the governments in BC, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario have chosen to ignore the public purse, the public healthcare system and a whole lot more in the name of vote pandering.

Yes I said it. I am calling them out for what I believe it to be.
You can not apply a religious right to something that is a privilege and not a right.
It is a privilege to ride a motorcycle - NOT A RIGHT.

There is no where in Canada where it is your inherent right to ride one.
If you choose to ride a motorcycle and you are Sikh, you have the option of wearing a smaller Turban to accommodate a helmet, according to what I have learned about your faith and the Turban.

Therefore, your argument is null and void and you should be wearing a helmet like the rest of us. The science says wearing helmets improve your chances of survival in the event of a crash, the law say riding is a privilege and we here in Canada we are a semi socialist country in that we have universal healthcare and your actions and choices affect the resources available to others.

SO...either repeal the exemptions and allow Sikhs to ride using their smaller Turban under their helmet OR allow choice for all.

Either ALL Lives Matter or NO Lives matter.

I feel that either the government is going to nanny us all the same way, or they can allow us to be adults and choose our level of risk.

In the meantime, I’ll wear my helmet, it protects me from the elements and road debris, those are good enough reasons for me.

Seriously, the helmet debate is the great debate, and it’s as old as the question “what came first the chicken or the egg?”….and I don’t see it being won any time soon and therefore I am hoping to be able to be on my bike next week and bringing you the first look review of my new Voss 580 Conquest Modular Helmet. (https://www.vosshelmetsusa.com/collections/modular-helmets/products/580-conquest-modular-helmet-with-integrated-sun-lens-dot-ece-high-viz-fluid)  If it isn't next week because of the crappy weather here, then it will be the first chance I get to ride with it again.

After that review, I am sure that I’ll have a few more articles on this helmet I am sure!
One or two rides does not a real to life kind of test ride make! (Wink Wink)

I’ll be looking at other helmets this season too,  in the lifelong quest to find a helmet that I can feel comfortable in, so, if you’d like a helmet reviewed, let me know!

Until then, if you are lucky enough to be riding today, please remember to ride like everyone around you is blind and can not see you.

A Look Back at 2018 The Watchmen Crew & Noize for Toyz Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 3

Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 3
The Watchmen Crew and Noize for Toyz

At J.P. Outpost after a beautiful ladies ride, Ride Like a Local spoke with Tammy Wilson.  Tammy is a board member and admin assistant with Noize for Toyz.

Tammy has a few hats she wears at work.  She counts inventory, gathers donations, posts on social media, and advertising.  She is wherever she is needed.  She feels her most important job is getting their name out there and making sure everyone knows who they are.

Even more importantly, Tammy has 5 children and 2 step children.  Tammys children are all involved and learn that giving back to the community teaches then valuable life skills and will end up as great adults.  They all love the riding community.

Next we met with Avery Chalifour.  She is a rider and the Youth Council Leader for Noize for Toyz.  As a young rider, Avery feels the support of her group, has several "moms" within the group, and has also learned how to act and behave around other riders.  She feels it's like having her own tribe with a whole lot of moral support.

Avery says coming out of high school, she saw a lot of kids struggling and it meant a lot to her to know that there was someone out there to help them.  Her goal is to bring more young people into the Noize for Toyz group that there is someone to take over so they may continue their service for years to come.  They try to bring in more members with each event.

BullyingCanada has Created a Hotline to Combat Potentially Fraudulent Fundraiser

For Immediate Release

BullyingCanada has Created a Hotline to Combat Potentially Fraudulent Fundraiser
“Gary Guitar” misrepresents his relationship with BullyingCanada to raise money

Fredericton, N.B., 6 May 2019—After declining to be involved in Gary “Sir Johan” Karlsen, III’s latest stunt last June, he finally agrees to remove BullyingCanada logos and branding from his site. Gary, who uses the aliases “Sir Johan” and “Gary Guitar,” contacted BullyingCanada in June 2018 promising donations of $1,000,000 a year. We declined to be involved with Mr. Karlsen based on concerns over reputation and past practices.

Since the refusal was issued, Mr. Karlsen has been using the BullyingCanada name, branding, and logo to try to confer legitimacy to his endeavors and to try to garner support. It has been reported that he has stated that we were an official partner and has requested donations or discounts in consideration thereof.

After contacting several organizations listed on his website, BobsGuitar.org, the replies we received indicated that other charities never authorized their logos or trademarks to be associated with the events or never heard of BobsGuitar.org or “Sir Johan” altogether.

“It’s ironic that we aid victimized youth every day and now we are the victims—or at least it feels that way. Attempts to mislead the public, like that which is occurring here, hurts everyone,” says Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of BullyingCanada Rob Benn-Frenette, O.N.B. “It adds layers of difficulty in being able to fulfill our core mission.”

Only after our counsel has issued a cease and desist letter—and made it clear to Mr. Karlsen after he tried to get us to revoke the letter that we were adamant in this refusal to participate—has he finally removed our logo and name from his list of partner organizations.

At this time, we ask that anyone across Canada who has donated funds to this purported fundraiser contact us immediately on a hotline established for this specific purpose: (800) 899-7085.

Our decision not to partner with Mr. Karlsen was informed by both his including our logo on his promotional materials before reaching out to us and his representation that he ran the nonexistent Jimi Hendrix Family Foundation—something that was repeatedly disavowed by the Hendrix family. Such as this one from Leon Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix’s brother).

BullyingCanada Inc is Canada’s premier—and first youth-created—anti-bullying charity. Founded by Rob Benn-Frenette, O.N.B. and Katie Thompson (Neu) in 2006, BullyingCanada has served hundreds of thousands of youth across the country by, amongst other initiatives, providing individual support, extensive resources, case management, scholarships, and presentations to schools and organizations.

Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 2
Watchmen Crew and Noize for Toyz

Ride Like a Local met up with Barry Koenig a rider visiting from Blackfalds.  He was out for the day to show his support for everyone.  After the ride he was off to Prince George to visit family and tour the scenery.
He made sure to stop and thank Renee and Belt Drive Betty for all the hard work she does and the information provided for the riders.

We then met with Keith Barron, the marketing manager for Secure Energy in Grande Prairie AB.  Secure Energy has sponsored many events within the riding community including Noize for Toyz and Toys for Tots.  Secure Energy showed up at the poker rally sporting a shiny new barbecue!
Secure Energy works in the oil field taking care of solids, fluid control and waste disposal all over Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and North Dakota.  Secure Energy has been around for about 15 years.

After a great ladies ride, Ride Like a Local spoke with Dani Chalifour, president of Noize for Toyz/Peace Country Noize for Toyz.  Their organization focuses on making sure kids have what they need for Christmas as well as in the hospital.  The ladies run held today collected money and toys for hospital programs, several food banks, and Odyssey House.  Helping these and making sure their kids have what they need over the holidays is one less worry for them.
After the ride, the ladies end up at J.P. Outpost Fusion Grill & Bar.  About 15-18 ladies go there after every ride as they are very supportive of the biking community.  They have a great location, great parking, and a dance floor!!

If you are blessed enough to live where you can be riding today, please remember to ride like everyone around you is blind and can not see you.

A Fashion Revolution for the Lady Rider

A Fashion Revolution for the Lady Rider

Although I have not had a chance to interview the feisty Brit who started the Women Riders World Relay (https://womenridersworldrelay.com/), I can get a great sense of who Hayley Bell is by watching her videos and reading the words on the Relay website.

Hayley is like so many of us gals who ride. She’s tired of riding gear that would fit if you had no hips, no chest. She’s tired of being an afterthought in this market place. She’s strong, capable, passionate, caring, and wanting to exercise her inner strength and feel beautiful while doing it.

More and more, as lady riders take up motorcycling in record breaking numbers, small manufacturers, largely lady owned companies, are attempting to answer the growing call from lady riders to have gear that feels good, flatters them and protects them.

Women rider - entrepreneurs Debra Chin, Ginger Damon and Aliki Karayan are three such ladies; all attempting to get more flattering, more comfortable, more functional clothing and accessories out there for this growing market. Like you, they ride and they were so frustrated that they decided to make clothing and accessories that work for the women’s work day, her playtime and her relax time.

A lot of ladies commute, and having a functional bag that is also attractive is a rather important bit of gear for the working gal.

Along with the Lauren Bag that offers all kinds of smart pockets for gear, and can double as a backpack, Debra of MotoChic Gear (www.motochicgear.com) offers stylish performance socks, small purses, tees etc., and she cross markets with Gigi Montrose (Ginger Damon) and VnM Sport (Aliki Karayan).

Ginger Damon of Gigi Montrose (https://gigimontrose.com) custom makes ladies riding jackets. She has two styles of denim jackets, the Fearless and Speed that are tailored and styled to flatter and yes, protect. With elements like a wax coating that makes the jackets water resistant, in a stretch denim fabric for comfort, the luxurious inner liner belies the fact that there is a full DuPont Kevlar lining throughout.

The French cuffs on Fearless and longer sleeves on Speed, longer back, backpocket for your cell phone and keys are all coupled with high quality zippers and buttons. The red signature stitching finishes the jackets off beautifully.

It feels good and I feel beautiful in it.

Last but not least is VnM Sport from Alili Karayan (https://vnmsport.com/)
Performance clothing for racers that translate to the every day rider and are YES, MADE for the female shape!

These are technologically designed articles of clothing, created from fabrics that amplify cooling, dry quickly, and are designed to improve your movement and comfort.

Ladies riding around the world in the largest relay in the world (potentially), ladies, changing how the industry views our bodies, shapes and our spending power.

Ladies - women, girls, gals, sisters, mommas, we are changing the face of riding. We are the future of riding as more and more women are competing, participating, grabbing life by the handlebars.

As a woman who rides who has been part of the community since the late 70’s, I am gratified to see so many women proudly proclaiming their femininity, their humanity, their strength by climbing on a motorcycle.

So ladies, celebrate International Female Ride Day with all your heart and soul and remember, there are ladies out there trying to change the riding gear industry, who are working to change to perception of the industry - if we all support them in their efforts, imagine how fast things will change in our favour!

Ride Ladies Ride...

A Look Back at 2018 The Watchmen Crew & Noize for Toyz Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 1

Season 5 Episode 7 Segment 1
The Watchmen Crew and Noize for Toyz

At the Watchmen Crews Poker Rally in Grande Prairie, Ride Like a Local spoke with the Vice President Darrin Stuffs.  The first rally of the season they were out there to meet people and have a great time.  This year they were raising money for Christmas Angels.  Every year The Watchmen Crew makes a donation to a family in need at Christmas.

Secure Energy was on site that day.  They supplied the trailer, all the food and all the drinks to ensure all the money raised would go directly to charity.  They are an awesome company that supports many fundraisers in the community.

When asked why The Watchmen Crew fund raises for so many charities involving children, Darrin had this to say "We support kids because they are the most vulnerable people in our society.  Helping them can build good adults from a solid childhood.  It is important that they are involved in sports and activities so that children have healthy functioning lives.  We can make a big difference and change the lives of a child one at a time."
