Updates on the Canadian Championship of Bike Building in Olds

The Western Canadian Championship of Bike Building

Well folks, I'll be going on the road again tomorrow! This time however I am taking my bike. Regina - the new home of the Western Canadian Championship of Bike Building! The show is completely sold out! Heather from Biker TV, Mondo from Denver Choppers - 34 competition machines....yes - it's gonna be a good time!

Barry Shpeley, a Local 60 Shaw member, needs our help locating his 23 year olddaughter. Candace, a mother of three children, has been missing from her homein Abbotsford since March 31, 2007. Her family is deeply concerned and worriedas to her whereabouts. Her car was found abandoned on April 11th, 2007 by RCMPofficers in Surrey.Abbotsford Police are still searching for Candace.

All coming together

Well as much of a challenge as this year's bike show has been to get put on it is all finally coming together.

I hope you all get a chance to read this weeks paper - if you are a member you should have the link today if you aren't you can read it next week.

We are in the final throws of re-negotiation with the Town of Olds. And things appear to be headed in the right direction.

Our job as riders is a continual one - educating people about the motorcycle community. Every time this show moves to a new town we have to educate people that we riders are not out to destroy the town we are in. The old 60's image that the mainstream media won't let die is to blame partly - we were stereotyped as a community, shaking off that stereotype - there's the challenge.

This riding season, no matter what event you go to - please - remember the volunteers who work so hard and often face many obstacles with the police services and town bureaucracies - don't be a cowboy - be respectful with your throttle hand and remember - if we as a community want to have these events to attend then we have to protect them by not doing dumb and thoughtless things like stunting or drunk riding.

We have an opportunity with every event we attend to sway public opinion and help people to understand that motorcycle riders are people first.

Lawsuit launched over colours

Mayor, alderman, city, pub owner, RCMP named The City of Grande Prairie, the RCMP and three individuals including the mayor, are facing a lawsuit in connection with the city's gang colours policy.

Last April, the city approved a voluntary program to give businesses support if they want to refuse access to anyone wearing gang colours or gang clothing. Along with the city and RCMP, the individuals who have been mentioned in the lawsuit are Mayor Wayne Ayling, Ald. Dwight Logan, and Charles Rodgers, owner of the Crown and Anchor Pub.

According to the court's statement of claim, the five plaintiffs are identified as Warren Vavrek, Jamie Ryan, Jamie Morgan, Ian Wallace and Earnest Dumont.

The statement of claim also mentions comments made by the individuals facing the lawsuit in a newspaper article last year in April. All of the individuals facing the lawsuit were quoted in the article.

"I don't believe that there are any particular grounds for a suit. It's a legal matter, and the city's insurance lawyers will be handling it," said Logan.

Ayling said those named in the lawsuit have been advised by their lawyers to not comment further.

Under the No Gang Colours, No Gang Clothing program, there is not a specific city bylaw that would prohibit the wearing of gang colours in commercial businesses.
Instead, the city lends its support to any business that wants to participate.

Window decals and signs were distributed to participating businesses for free to display.
Similar to the "No shirt, no shoes, no service" policy undertaken by many businesses, the signs would warn "No gang colours, no gang clothing."

At the time, the No Gang Colours, No Gang Clothing program was approved the city believed that if the policy faced any legal challenges it would be able to withstand any lawsuits as it is enshrined in the constitution that any property owner can expel any person for any reason.

"It's about people who profess to follow a criminal lifestyle and basically saying that we don't want you to advertise that you are professing to follow a criminal lifestyle on city property," said Ayling.

"This is about a city policy for city policy, it doesn't profess to do anything on non-city property."

Laval was a blast!

Pascal Richard and his group put on a wicked show with awesome entertainment and some of the most incredible iron I have ever seen competed in the first Eastern Canadian Championship of Bike Building.

Our newly crowned champ is Jesy from Classic Steel with Daniel from V2 Obsession coming in in second place.
