Freshly turned 18, Riley Gangon is already becoming a seasoned bull rider.  Returning to Airdrie from a shoulder injury, Riley is looking forward to his rides.

Riley pulled a bull of Curtis Sawyers.  Little Red Bull has a left hand pull and Riley says that's important when you're riding.  In the short round, he hopes to pull a bull that has bucked him off a few times.

Riley says the bulls love the rides and are treated like royalty.  Each bull is eager to ride and truly enjoys it.

Tanner, age 5 and Adam, age 6 were loving the mutton busting.  Tanner won the championship this year and was awarded a shiny new belt buckle.  Tanner says it was pretty cool.  He wants to grow up to be a real cowboy but can't remember why.  Adam wants to grow up to be a cowboy because he loves riding the sheep.

Russ Binder is one of the family members that own The Airdrie Airpark who  are hosts to this years event.  Russ brought out his Mercedes and took a few laps on the track and came back with some pretty impressive times.  The Binder family got involved simply because the love the people and all the noise!

Dana Mum of the Didsbury Car Club says they are a group of men and women that like to promote different events and support different services and the suicide awareness campaign.

The do a lot of drag races, show and shines, drive in theaters and a cabaret every year.  6 or 7 events a year to get the community involved and raise awareness

Emery Erickson is a profession rodeo announcer.  He has worked in 3 countries and announces over 150 events a year.  He loves the Airdrie Bikes and Bulls Rumble on the Runway.  Everyone wants to be there and the event has always won awards and top honors.  It is the event of the year.

Every year there is some people who speculate that the animals are treated unfairly.  Emery was there to assure everyone they are treated like kings and queens!!  The are very well taken care of with the best of everything.  A good bull can fetch $50-$100,000 so they make sure nothing bad happens to them.  A vet is always on hand and the bulls are not harmed at all.

Everyones favorite event this year is the Wild Cow Milking.  Many sponsors, business men, and city slickers get to try their hand and milking a wild cow and it makes for great entertainment!!

The Smith Pulling Team is a motorcycle racing team that consists of Dad, Ted Smith and Daughter, Holly Smith.  This was Hollys first year racing and had a blast.  This was Teds first time at a tree in 45 years!  Old school was beating new school all day at this event!  They all had great time and are working hard to keep up the good work.

Betty spotted a Barbie doll on the back of a Ninja and had to stop to ask why.  Steve Ross, a drag racer, was sporting the Barbie on the back of his bike because his wife had to work that day.  Barbie was filling in as the back rider.  Steve says he races there because it is so much safer than the street.  His goal is to be consistent to win.

The Didsbury Car Club was hosting the drag racing this year.  Rod Peters, drag racer and rat rod driver, was at the drags for his first year and thoroughly enjoying it.  His rat rod has been called the vehicle from the Mad Max movies and looks quite similar!  He found the 1951 Chevy pick up in his neighbors pasture and it had been sitting there for 30 years.  He found parts, welded them on, and made the truck work!

Ride Like a Local sat down with Adrian Pruden.  Adrian is the event coordinator for the Airdrie Bikes and Bulls Rumble on the Runway.

This year the event was held at the airport.  This is a brand new venue for them and they didn't know what to expect having to add a runway.  They built big!  The beer gardens alone are 2 1/2 football fields long!!  And it was a good thing too as the attendance this year was outstanding.

Tons of people come together every year to make the event successful.  From board members, volunteers, and charities, they all come together as one and create an amazing event every year.

There are a number events that are held to include all ages.  Drag racing, bull riding, motorcycle rodeo, saddle bronc riding and mutton busting to name a few.

There are a number of events to include all ages that makes this the perfect family event.  Tubular Optimization are some big sponsors for the weekend.  Tyler and Eric tried their hand at the Wild Cow Milking and Tylers son Tanner was the mutton busting champion and won a belt buckle!!

Of the many sponsors that support the weekend two major ones are the airport owner, and Terra Energy.  All were excited to have a blank canvas to work with and have already begun planning for next year.

Airdrie Bikes and Bulls and the Airdrie Oilmens Association support charities like the Airdrie Food Bank, The Community Links Program and the Airdrie and District Victims Association.  The service each charity provides is far reaching and incredibly important.  It definitely makes these guys proud to be able to give back.

The Airdrie Bikes & Bulls, Rumble on the Runway 2018

The last weekend of July I headed for Airdrie and the Airdrie Bikes & Bulls, Rumble on the Runway put on by the Alberta Oilmen's Association. This was to be my second time attending this event, last year's was held at the rodeo grounds, this year was to be held at the Airdrie Air Park.

The AOA had decided that the old rodeo grounds, while an accommodating venue to work with, just wasn't the location to help the event really take off the way it should and so they negotiated a deal with the Airdrie Airpark.

What a great move!

While they had lots of little hiccups, the venue itself, being such an open canvas is amazing and will give this event the chance it needs to truly flourish.

Adrian Pruden, the event coordinator realized very quickly that they had made the beer gardens too big with no people mover, and yes, it made it tough on people. However, based on the numbers of people who did attend, the beer gardens is the right size, it just truly requires a people mover!
And more seating and garbage cans will be needed next year, but truly, for the first time at this venue, well done! Very well done.

They got around some of the challenges by having waitresses serving at the rodeo event, it made a lot of people happy that they did not have to loose their seats in order to have an adult beverage.
The food vendors were camped out in the middle area of the event so no one had too far to walk.  The Perogy truck was one of the favourites along with the Porky's Catering truck. There were vendors selling jewelry, clothing, makeup and all sorts of gadgets too!

They had a party bus shuttle service that took people to and from various hotels and other locations in Airdrie, to ensure no one had to drink and drive. I used the service extensively and was so grateful for it. I left my motorcycle in town at a friends house.

They had fantastic security folks on the gates, but there were one or two folk that needed to be told not to be so aggressive in the way they handled things. The senior management of the security team were incredible folks to work with.

The campsite was enormous, there were light towers with power hook ups everywhere, lots of port o potties, the biggest single challenge - no people movers but this is being remedied for 2019!

On Friday when I arrived I volunteered along with my friend Marnie Thibodeau to hang banners for sponsors, I am not sure either of us knew what we signed up for but four hours later we were done!

When the show opened Friday evening, the cowboys and cowgirls took centre stage and my lord they put on a show.  I love the silky voice of rodeo announcer Emery Erickson, the man has been working at his trade for decades and he's damned good at.

The bucking stock came from a wide variety of stock contractors and they brought out some amazingly rank horses and bulls.

In all there were 28 failed bull ride attempts. Three successful rides by some of pro rodeos TOP cowboys in the Bull Riders of Canada Association.

But it was the kids that stole the show.
Between the wild mini horses and mutton busting, the kids won the hearts of so many.

I love watching family sports and when you think about it, rodeo, drag racing and motorcycling are all very much family sports. I guess that's why this trifecta seems to work so well.

All weekend there were amazing bands too, but I was so wiped out from walking that venue, doing photography, video and interviews that I never got to enjoy them.  I hear the IKONS, the Kiss Tribute band was utterly amazing.

Folks, although this event is 9 years old, when you move to a new venue, it's like being a brand new event,  ALMOST.

This year was a proving ground and while yes there were challenges, they proved to themselves that they, the Airdrie Oilmen's Association can do an amazing job no matter where they host their event because of the most incredible sponsors they have.

I know I plan on attending the 2019 edition - I had a blast this year, but I also know of many of the changes coming for next year and folks, you'll want to be there too, I am sure of it!

PTSD - the shame, fear, anger and misunderstandings and RIDING!

PTSD is a dreadful dis-ease.

It can come on so hard, so strong, so fast that you simply can't function in any coherent way.

Sometimes you know what your triggers are and other times you get caught so off guard by a trigger that you didn't know existed that you feel foolish or worse.

The outbursts of a PTSD survivor can be almost as disturbing to witness and or deal with as the outburst from a person with Tourette Syndrome.

For the person inside of the PTSD episode, it can be scary, frightening, embarrassing, horrifying, mortifying - there are a lot of words you can put to how the person in the moment feels. As the whole thing blows up out of control, the person inside of the episode almost immediate begins berating themselves, at least that's been my experience.

I was diagnosed back in the late 90's and I gotta tell you that the supports for civilians suck.
The drugs put so much weight on you that your self esteem goes in the toilet, they mess with your innards and make them unhappy and unhealthy.

The drugs, they are the absolute worst part, next to a health care system that is over burdened. Continuity of care is challenging especially in the north where doctors from other countries who seek to immigrate to Canada are "requested" to work here for their first 5 years.

Many leave here for warmer climes and bigger cities with larger population bases for customers.

At least for veterans, there is some attempt at a cohesive support program, there is truly little for the civilian.

One of the hardest things to deal with from my perspective is the shame one feels when you get to a point that you can't control your tone of voice or the anguish or anger with which you speak.

Since May and the first anniversary of Fort Mac I have struggled hard with PTSD.
I am winning, but I have had a few occasions that I am not overly proud of.



Being around others who judge you, who can't deal with or accept you because of the PTSD can make life, interesting.

3rd CAV Rally 

Many people turn on you once they experience a PTSD episode with you, those who don't, those are the ones you hang on to.

It can be a very lonely way to live.

This is my way of reaching out the Military Minds Rolling Barrage as they complete their trip - across Canada to raise PTSD awareness...although I have not always gotten along with the way their organization uses dark humour publicly sometimes, I do appreciate the work that they do.

I salute all who work to help people understand the invisible would called PTSD.

That work benefits everyone with PTSD or those who love someone with it.



Now onto other more pleasant topics.

In the last few weeks I have not been on the computer much.

Hence why I have not updated this blog for a bit.

I have actually been out riding.

Pipes Education event at Harley-Davidson of Edmonton

I am finally coming out of the fog of adrenal fatigue and while I can now work 6 days a week again, I am still only able to work between 8-10 hours a day, sometimes I can manage 12.
When you are used to being a one person crew that worked 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week, it's rough. I miss those highly productive hours.
HOWEVER as I mentioned, I have been riding and enjoying every mile I have put on and there have been a few.

I went to the  Run to the Hills Memorial Rally, Airdrie Bikes & Bulls, spent some time with the Military Police in Dundurn Saskatchewan, and I attended the 3rd CAV Rally, I went to Drumheller for a day with a friend and I rode Lucky Highway 13 to create videos with.




I spent time in Wetaskiwin at the Reynolds-Alberta Museum for the Motorcycle Ride to the Reynolds presented by Honda Canada and got one heck of an education on motorcycle pipes from the gang over at Harley-Davidson of Edmonton.
