As the editor of a newspaper that sponsors a lot of events, there are always stories to print and that's wonderful, but few stories have touched my heart quite the way the Women Riders World Relay has.

Women from around the globe are joining hands to help empower other women and educate the manufacturer as to the size of the female audience and what their needs in gear and motorcycles truly is.

What advice would you give riders wanting to participate in the WRWR or a Ripple Ride?
Just  get out and DO IT! See what happens.

A Look Back at 2018 with Bully Enns in Cynthia AB Season 6 Episode 11 Segment 1

Season 6 Episode 11 Segment 1
Bullying Enns & Ubaka

In a beautiful little town called Cynthia Alberta, Steve Enns, the founder of Bully Enns, spoke with Renee.

Bully Enns supports children who are being bullied.  Bullying is no laughing matter. It can have life long effects and can often lead to self harm or even suicide.

Steve founded the group after seeing how much bullying goes on on social media alone.  About 10 years ago, he and about a group of 5 friends took a neighbors child to school on the back of a bike after learning he was being bullied.  An idea spawned, and his group was formed.

About 150 to 200 kids showed up for kids day put on by Bully Enns in Cynthia AB.  With games, face painting, and even a dunk tank, fun was had by all.

Bullying Enns - ending bullying and making our community stronger.

A Look Back at 2018 At The Airdrie Oilmens Assc. Airdrie Bikes and Bulls Rumble on the Runway Season 6 Episode 10 Segment 2

Season 6 Episode 10 Segment 2
The Airdrie Oilmens Assc.
Airdrie Bikes and Bulls Rumble on the Runway

Emery Erickson is a profession rodeo announcer.  He has worked in 3 countries and announces over 150 events a year.  He loves the Airdrie Bikes and Bulls Rumble on the Runway.  Everyone wants to be there and the event has always won awards and top honors.  It is the event of the year.

Every year there is some people who speculate that the animals are treated unfairly.  Emery was there to assure everyone they are treated like kings and queens!!  The are very well taken care of with the best of everything.  A good bull can fetch $50-$100,000 so they make sure nothing bad happens to them.  A vet is always on hand and the bulls are not harmed at all.

Everyones favorite event this year is the Wild Cow Milking.  Many sponsors, business men, and city slickers get to try their hand and milking a wild cow and it makes for great entertainment!!

The Smith Pulling Team is a motorcycle racing team that consists of Dad, Ted Smith and Daughter, Holly Smith.  This was Hollys first year racing and had a blast.  This was Teds first time at a tree in 45 years!  Old school was beating new school all day at this event!  They all had great time and are working hard to keep up the good work.

Betty spotted a Barbie doll on the back of a Ninja and had to stop to ask why.  Steve Ross, a drag racer, was sporting the Barbie on the back of his bike because his wife had to work that day.  Barbie was filling in as the back rider.  Steve says he races there because it is so much safer than the street.  His goal is to be consistent to win.

The Didsbury Car Club was hosting the drag racing this year.  Rod Peters, drag racer and rat rod driver, was at the drags for his first year and thoroughly enjoying it.  His rat rod has been called the vehicle from the Mad Max movies and looks quite similar!  He found the 1951 Chevy pick up in his neighbors pasture and it had been sitting there for 30 years.  He found parts, welded them on, and made the truck work!

A Look Back at 2018 The Watchmen Crew & Noize for Toyz Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 3

Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 3
The Watchmen Crew and Noize for Toyz

At J.P. Outpost after a beautiful ladies ride, Ride Like a Local spoke with Tammy Wilson.  Tammy is a board member and admin assistant with Noize for Toyz.

Tammy has a few hats she wears at work.  She counts inventory, gathers donations, posts on social media, and advertising.  She is wherever she is needed.  She feels her most important job is getting their name out there and making sure everyone knows who they are.

Even more importantly, Tammy has 5 children and 2 step children.  Tammys children are all involved and learn that giving back to the community teaches then valuable life skills and will end up as great adults.  They all love the riding community.

Next we met with Avery Chalifour.  She is a rider and the Youth Council Leader for Noize for Toyz.  As a young rider, Avery feels the support of her group, has several "moms" within the group, and has also learned how to act and behave around other riders.  She feels it's like having her own tribe with a whole lot of moral support.

Avery says coming out of high school, she saw a lot of kids struggling and it meant a lot to her to know that there was someone out there to help them.  Her goal is to bring more young people into the Noize for Toyz group that there is someone to take over so they may continue their service for years to come.  They try to bring in more members with each event.

A Look Back at 2018 The Watchmen Crew & Noize for Toyz Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 2

Season 6 Episode 7 Segment 2
Watchmen Crew and Noize for Toyz

Ride Like a Local met up with Barry Koenig a rider visiting from Blackfalds.  He was out for the day to show his support for everyone.  After the ride he was off to Prince George to visit family and tour the scenery.
He made sure to stop and thank Renee and Belt Drive Betty for all the hard work she does and the information provided for the riders.

We then met with Keith Barron, the marketing manager for Secure Energy in Grande Prairie AB.  Secure Energy has sponsored many events within the riding community including Noize for Toyz and Toys for Tots.  Secure Energy showed up at the poker rally sporting a shiny new barbecue!
Secure Energy works in the oil field taking care of solids, fluid control and waste disposal all over Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and North Dakota.  Secure Energy has been around for about 15 years.

After a great ladies ride, Ride Like a Local spoke with Dani Chalifour, president of Noize for Toyz/Peace Country Noize for Toyz.  Their organization focuses on making sure kids have what they need for Christmas as well as in the hospital.  The ladies run held today collected money and toys for hospital programs, several food banks, and Odyssey House.  Helping these and making sure their kids have what they need over the holidays is one less worry for them.
After the ride, the ladies end up at J.P. Outpost Fusion Grill & Bar.  About 15-18 ladies go there after every ride as they are very supportive of the biking community.  They have a great location, great parking, and a dance floor!!

A Look Back at 2018 The Future of Motorcycling Season 6 Episode 5 Segment 3

Season 6 Episode 5 Segment 3
The Future of Motorcycling Part 2

First we spoke with Payton, a 16 year old dirt biker at the Calgary Motorcycle Show.  Payton would love to have a street bike but his Mom has said no.
He loves the KTM sports bike and says he will save his money and take the safety course before buying one.
Payton wants to graduate and become a welder.  He started welding last year and just loves it!

Next we spoke with Filipa Borges Rechlo.  A 35 year old female rider from Lloydminster AB.  Filipa works up in the Yukon as a welder.

Filipa grew up in Ontario where riding was huge  No one in the family rides, although, she knows it's in her blood.

The industry struggles with getting more women and younger riders.  Filipa says women and younger people need to get more comfortable with riding and enjoy it more.  The industry is catering to women by making smaller bikes.  We should all be more encouraging and let them know that they can do it.

Women riding groups are a big help for getting the female riders together and overcoming the fear!

TWENTY THOUSAND Dollars Raised!

The Second Annual Ride for Mom is in the history books with over $20,000 dollars being raised to help Edmonton Area Emergency Shelters. The Ride for Mom is partnered with the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters & The Edmonton Domestic Violence Shelters Engage

Every year over 10,000 Albertans access Emergency Shelters.

Women, children and seniors that experience abuse are too often turned away from shelters for a lack of space.  When that happens, the case workers take that experience home with them and it destroys these helpers as they feel helpless. The Ride for Mom is all about changing the dialogue about domestic abuse and of course raising much needed funds and awareness.

It is important that these shelters get more funds, and I think it is essential that the Ride for Mom grows across the country until one day, shelters and this kind of awareness and financial support is no longer needed.

Krysta Shields, the ride's founder, wants to urge people who would like to start a Ride for Mom in their area to reach out.

As was said earlier, the Ride for Mom is all about changing the dialogue around Domestic Abuse across Canada and your votes are needed.

You can reach Krysta at: krysta@blackjacksroadhouse.com
In the about line of your email put: -"We'd like to be a Ride For Mom Community!"

I spoke with a number of the Edmonton area riders about this event and what they thought of it.

Rob Truscott who is a member of the military and has attended a number of events summed up what everyone else had to say: "This is one of the better rides I have ever been on. Water at every stop, the Sheriffs and regional police departments blocking intersections to ensure everyone gets safely through. What more can a person ask for?"

Well how about a blocked off street in Tofield and Sheriffs with a sense of humour?

In all this ride is comprised of three stops and at each stop you get a numbered ticket that gets you a chance on one of the big basket giveaways filled with prizes:

1) Reynolds Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin.

2) Camrose Alberta, this year was at the House of Thunder.

3) The Tofield stop last year was at Town Hall and Library, this year at the Moonshine Cafe and the whole block was cordoned off for us!

Everything went smoothly as there were lots of signs guiding us all as to which way to go and in many cases there was also a Sheriff or a police officer to ask. The chase truck and trailer had to pick up one rider with a flat tire, but other than that, it was smooth riding.

In year 2 the event saw 160 motorcycles come out!

Mother Nature - THANK YOU for cooperating!

$20,000 was raised and ALL OF THAT money, thanks to the hard fundraising work by Krysta Shields, will go to the cause directly.

It was a safe, well run event on the roadways thanks to Kevin O'Connor of the Wetaskiwin office of the Alberta Sheriffs who also happens to sit on the Ride for Mom Board. Because of his participation, his "brothers" stepped up to help this worthy cause and they dod so with a great sense  of humour and community.

Tyler Grant who does the in-house photography and media collection and dissemination for Blackjacks Roadhouse and does a good job of keeping their social media rocking and he was busting his butt behind his camera.

Various groups have decided to make this event a mandatory event for their membership to attend, the Guardians of the Children are one such group and I interviewed Clint AKA Dragon about what this event means to their club and as suspected it's message and cause dovetails with the help to children in distress that the Guardians offer.

The sponsors that came on board this year were incredible:

ATB Financial, Klondike Insurance Agencies, Pratts Food Service, Harley-Davidson of Edmonton, CTV, Heritage Harley-Davidson, Reynolds-Alberta Museum, Town of Tofield, Airways Country Inn, Peace Hills Insurance,
Battle River Landscape Supply and Design, Wetaskiwin Coop, Alberta Sheriffs, Victim Services Camrose, Alberta Cycle, House of
Thunder Camrose, Moonshine Cafe Tofield.

I was so honoured to again support this event.

On a personal note....

I got pretty emotional when we could not get connected to the internet to do the interviews for Live TV. We did, sort of finally get me connected but on the phone and the stream went live after we were done - I have discovered how stressful a live event can be when you are at an event and on really tight time frames and no crew to help you when things don't go right.

I am afraid my stress cracks were showing a tad as I almost had to pack up and go do interviews for regular TV and forget about the live event totally.

Manon, a Blackjack's Roadhouse employee (who is also my friend) who was doing everything she could to help me get connected and kept reassuring me it would be OK and thanks to her help, it was.

Manon, you are an angel.

While the Live TV did not go exactly as planned, it did finally get done and that set the rest of the day up to be a great one.

The rider was AMAZING.

I got some great ride footage, some incredible interviews and am looking forward to editing the video for "Ride Like a Local" Season 6 on EastLink TV & on YouTube!

Next year's Ride for Mom team will be starting planning for 2019 soon!
Visit rideformom.ca to volunteer or perhaps start your own Ride for Mom in your community.

Some time in Port Alberni, "Canada's MOST Rider Friendly Community"

The Rider Friendly Business Association in conjunction with Community Futures of Alberta & BC hosted this years Canada's MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest.

Port Alberni won this, our second contest and it was my pleasure to head out there for their Toy Run this past weekend...their 33rd Toy Run!

I arrived on Thursday and stayed with some friends, Trish and Quentin, and on Friday morning, I connected with David Wiwchar, the Chairman of the Toy Run Committee.

I set up my cameras and set about the task of interviewing members of the Toy Run Committee.
It's my favourite job, getting to know the hard working folks behind the scenes of an event.
I know how many hands it takes to do a job and do it well.  These folks, they do it very, very well.

There is a pride here, a quiet, yet fiercely determined pride.

The kind of pride that moves mountains.

Each person I interviewed spoke with such pride of their fellow committee members and the fact that they leave their egos and attitudes at the doorway of every meeting. These people come together to not just for this monster job of hosting a toy run, but they come together to engage their community and man do they do it right!

I can not wait for the TV episodes to air - there will be two of them I am pretty sure and in their own words these beautiful people will tell you all about the work they do!

Anyway, I spent the day interviewing and hanging around the Glenwood Centre where the bulk of the activities would be taking place. I watched with amazement as task after task was accomplished with military precision. We broke bread around 6:30 pm, corn on the cob, hamburgers and potato salad.

I went to my hotel, the Best Western Plus, Barclay Hotel. The committee however was there at the Glenwood, until well past 9 PM putting the finishing touches on the Centre.

The hotel staff got me checked in and explained the features and amenities of the hotel, I took my luggage rack upstairs, unloaded my bags in a really nice room with two double beds and by the time I took the cart back downstairs, the Langley HOG Chapter had rolled in and their parking stalls were all filled!

Gotta love a hotel that will treat their two wheeled guests with such extra courtesy.

I got up nice and early on Saturday, I wanted to catch as much of the feeling of the day as possible.

I was greeted at the Glenwood Centre by Robin and Tom, they were so upbeat and happy, Tom's daughter was busy setting up the kid's area while his wife was getting the free popcorn and candy floss ready for the kids.

You see what THIS community sided group called the Port Alberni Toy Run Committee has done, is to EDUCATE about and INVOLVE their entire community in the event.

The Toy Run supports SOOOOO many causes ALL YEAR ROUND!
AND it's free to ride in the toy run, but so many choose not to register because they don't understand that registration is JUST to count bikes.

The coffee and donuts are free - well, by donation if yah have...this is NOT a cash grab event folks. You buy dance tickets if you want to.
You buy Pork Buns with salads and corn on the cob if you want. (midnight lunch)

NOTHING is expected of you other than you to bring your heart, some toys and or a donation to the cause, buy a tee shirt...they are grateful to take what you donate and turn it into a year's
worth of support for the kids of their community.

The teens breakfast program is one they are particularly proud to be partnered in as it has helped the graduation rate to flourish.  They support parks and recreation by helping to host free swims, hot dogs and other free items for first night,  Easter festivities and Halloween too!

They support the Salvation Army and their Christmas Hamper drive and oh so many more non profits that help kids that benefit from what 30 dedicated Toy Run Members do all year round.

Every year, organizations that have benefitted from the fundraising done by the Toy Run Committee come out and volunteer for the toy run in return!

It is a totally a unified project that brings together many non profits, all supporting kids, all working together for the kids and you should see the way this city gets out and thanks the riding community for their support. They come out in the hundreds withs signs saying "Thank You Riders"

I can't say enough about this community, this crew of people...they are utterly awe inspiring to watch in action.

Later I arrived back at the Glenwood Centre where I handed off the trophy for "Canada's
MOST Rider Friendly Community" after saying a few words on behalf of Bob Ross and his beloved town of Two Hills, the first community to win our contest.

But that's not where this story ends....more tomorrow!

Until then, if you are blessed enough to be riding, please ride like everyone around you is blind and can not see you.

Going Back to Our Roots - an exciting time!

A number of months ago while I was dealing with a diagnosis of adrenal fatigue and benign tumours I was struggling with how to manage Belt Drive Betty Media and everything we provide for riders.
On top of the work load, 2015 has been one heck of a year, my mother died, I said goodbye to an aunt with brain cancer, my husband crashed his truck, I lost several good friends to a variety of things like motorcycle crashes. The court case with Sturgis North/Canada is dragging on and on with zero movement....

I have been tired, worn out and feeling used up for quite a while...

We do a lot of charitable and non profit work in this community and I love doing it.  I live to do it.
I needed to find a better way of balancing things. Being a small company with only 2 staff, it has become harder to do and with me so sick, well let's just say it's been a rough, rough go. (Poor Ali)

BUT  THEN I HAD AN EPIPHANY!

I am a dreamer, a determined dreamer.  I know that what you focus on is what you get and I also know that there is an answer to every challenge.

One night, after meditating on the issue before me, I had a dream that changed my outlook on everything.

In the dream I relaunched the Busted Knuckle Chronicles in print format, going right back to the roots of the paper.  The dream held all the answers to the challenges I had faced in the past with distribution and printing issues...

With a renewed sense of purpose, I set about learning all about how to provide a team of territory publishers the content, the tools & the resources to print the community news that would pertain to their region. I figured out how to make it financially viable  and rewarding for everyone who wanted to be a part of it.

And then Ali and I set about getting everything put together....

And so, I am proud to announce that "The BKC News Bytes" is ready to launch!

Beginning in December of 2015 The Busted Knuckle Chronicles News Bytes will begin hitting a pub, coffee shop or waiting room near you!

Here is the Sample Paper on the left....

This is how we started out - EXACTLY!

All those years ago (14 to be exact), I could not wrap my head around distribution or the right method of print, after all I was just learning.  But now, well, I have learned a lot, met a lot of people and have finally been able to put together a win, win, win package that serves everyone well.

With a national print agreement with Staples and territory publishers who are on contract that can earn great income, we now have an even bigger, broader way to serve the riding community.

The BKC News Bytes is filled with small news bytes of the bigger stories provided by the national paper, The Busted Knuckle Chronicles.

These small stories are of local, regional, national and international flavour covering topics from motorcycle charity events and the good works that riders do every day of the week to information on new products, motorcycles and a more!

The Thoughts to Ponder section of the paper is filled with things that will make you go HMMMM...

The upcoming events for YOUR community and region are powered by our National Events Calendars at www.canadianmotorcycleevents.com

"All Things Canadian" by my beaver mascot, Road Trip Rita provides you with interesting tidbits on Canada and its people.

The Funny Bone is jokes, family friendly jokes that an 8 year old can tell his grandma without getting his mouth washed out with soap!

Belt Drive Betty's Word Search, put pen to paper and occupy yourself while you are waiting for your meal, you car, your appointment!

We have currently have 7 territory publishers, (the 5 below plus one new person who is being trained and myself).
Between all of us we are slated to be opening 64 distribution territories by the end of March 2015!

Our goal is to be in 200+ territories by the end of March 2016.
(A distribution territory is 50,000 people or more in size)

Our first distribution regions are: All of Vancouver Island (10 territories), 13 territories in the Fraser Valley, 15 territories in Alberta, 16 territories in Saskatchewan and 10 territories in Ontario!

Just like in the old days when the Busted Knuckle Chronicles was in print here in GP before Canada Post and huge distribution issues forced us to go on line...riders will once again be getting the news they need in a nice quick read, non riders will be learning about all of the good things we riders do...advertisers will be getting benefit of local marketing to an appreciative audience (after all, who wants to be bored while waiting for a meal or an appointment).

If you would like to know more about how to become a contracted territory publisher please contact me, I'd be happy to share this opportunity with you.  bdbetty @ gmail.com  (fix the spaces)

If you want to know more about being a distribution location or about advertising in the paper in your community or region contact one of our territory publishers today!

We at Belt Drive Betty Media are all looking forward to this new direction and the expanded opportunities it provides to our company and the people who join us!

Have a BLESSED Day everyone!

I have been asked by the brand new sales people that I am in the process of training "What the hell is Belt Drive Betty Media anyway?
