Our Road Trips & Tours Book turned out pretty well, all things considered!

I'll be honest – I'm 5 weeks late going to print. We had a fatal database issue with our business listings that meant 3 weeks of intensive cleanup. That put me right in the middle of preparing for our Liberation of the Netherlands event at Veterans Memorial Gardens (owned by the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association).

I took four days away for riding and working off my motorcycle, then came home to a complete gong show of issues that had to be dealt with. I was finally able to get this to the printer by their drop-dead time of 8:30 AM this morning!

OMG, I cannot wait to get on my motorcycle Sunday or Monday – sunshine or rain – and get some soul time. I might be working, but when it's off the back of my bike, I'm good with that!

Upcoming Partner Visits:

Two Hills, Fort McMurray, Kikino, Athabasca, Slave Lake, Delburne, Forestburg, Millet, Leduc – I'm hitting as many of our partners as I can, interviewing them for "Ride Like a Local" on YouTube. Since breaking away from EastLink TV and being able to actually promote our content, I'm happy to report that in just a few short months we're over 1,300 subscribers. It all helps promote our rural communities!

What Makes Us Different:

I know there are other groups doing similar things now – but we were doing this long before COVID. The others came post-COVID, and that timing caused changes in the landscape. These other groups go to businesses to make money for their causes through cost-based memberships and fee-for-service models for their sponsor businesses.

Our model is fundamentally differentwe only charge businesses, never the consumer. We're completely free to all tourists, whether you're a backyard Alberta tourist, from across Canada, or around the world. If you're travelling in Alberta and want good info and support, we offer it at no cost to you! This allows you to support your membership groups and use our services too!

Here's to a summer of miles, memories, photos, smiles, laughter, friendship, ALBERTA!

Bullying Enns & Ubaka
Cynthia AB

Mark Smith, an MLA for Drayton Valley - Devon, was the dunk tank champion for the day.

Mark says, as an MLA, he is fortunate to be able to get involved in amazing events like this and help support raising funds and awareness for good causes.

Mark was a teacher for over 30 years and understands how important it is for our children to feel safe, appreciated, and loved just the way they are.  That's what this event was showing and building community.  Mark says as an MLA, it's all about building trust and community.

Murray Galavan of the Drayton Valley, Brazeau County Fire Department and the Red Knights Motorcycle club was asked by another rider if he could bring out the fire truck for the kids.  He was glad to do it and was there to show the kids exactly what a fireman is all about.

Riley was a young man all dressed up in the firemen gear.  He's not sure he wants to be a fireman but was sure having a great time!

The whole day was centered around the children.  It was a learning experience for all and even life changing for some.

Season 6 Episode 10 Segment 2
The Airdrie Oilmens Assc.
Airdrie Bikes and Bulls Rumble on the Runway

Emery Erickson is a profession rodeo announcer.  He has worked in 3 countries and announces over 150 events a year.  He loves the Airdrie Bikes and Bulls Rumble on the Runway.  Everyone wants to be there and the event has always won awards and top honors.  It is the event of the year.

Every year there is some people who speculate that the animals are treated unfairly.  Emery was there to assure everyone they are treated like kings and queens!!  The are very well taken care of with the best of everything.  A good bull can fetch $50-$100,000 so they make sure nothing bad happens to them.  A vet is always on hand and the bulls are not harmed at all.

Everyones favorite event this year is the Wild Cow Milking.  Many sponsors, business men, and city slickers get to try their hand and milking a wild cow and it makes for great entertainment!!

The Smith Pulling Team is a motorcycle racing team that consists of Dad, Ted Smith and Daughter, Holly Smith.  This was Hollys first year racing and had a blast.  This was Teds first time at a tree in 45 years!  Old school was beating new school all day at this event!  They all had great time and are working hard to keep up the good work.

Betty spotted a Barbie doll on the back of a Ninja and had to stop to ask why.  Steve Ross, a drag racer, was sporting the Barbie on the back of his bike because his wife had to work that day.  Barbie was filling in as the back rider.  Steve says he races there because it is so much safer than the street.  His goal is to be consistent to win.

The Didsbury Car Club was hosting the drag racing this year.  Rod Peters, drag racer and rat rod driver, was at the drags for his first year and thoroughly enjoying it.  His rat rod has been called the vehicle from the Mad Max movies and looks quite similar!  He found the 1951 Chevy pick up in his neighbors pasture and it had been sitting there for 30 years.  He found parts, welded them on, and made the truck work!

If you are blessed enough to live where you can be riding today, please remember to ride like everyone around you is blind and can not see you.

Canada's MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest - Supporting our Community!

We are awful excited that in its third year, Canada's MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest has seen an explosion in nominations.

Thanks to our relationship with Community Futures, this contest is beginning to really gain traction and we are so grateful to them for their support and love of small towns, small business and entrepreneurs!

Riders it seems are catching on!
So are communities and community leaders.

Helping smaller communities that don't usually get a whole lot of fanfare for what they do right in the game of tourism is a really gratifying thing for our whole team.

In all we and our media partners giveaway over $60K in marketing to the winning communities and provide a way for all communities that consider themselves Rider Friendly to get some attention and notice!

Belt Drive Betty Media is made up of contractors who live a motorcycle life.

We are so thrilled to support our sport on so many levels, helping to promote the CMDRA, helping to promote every charity and non profit ride that we can, every small business event, riding club event...for free in most cases - it's part of our mandate, our mission if you will!  We give back into the community we make our living from.

We promote adventure riding, motocross and anything else that our readers submit to us, and that they find interesting and engaging.  Through our events calendars, our newspaper, our contest and the Rider Friendly Business Association Community & Directory ....the community news and information we disseminate really is "Rider Powered News!"

We have some wonderful new media partners that we are now working with as well and this will only help raise Canada's visibility as a motorcycling destination of note!

Our New Media Partners:
Man Wants in the UK, the brand new Colorado Rider News and World of Motorcycling Pod Cast!
AND, our stalwart partners:
Northern Horizon Newspaper and Kick Stands Up on Reality Radio 101 with Lou DeVouono

We are working hard to spread the news and word about our great country and the amazing, unique and inspiring riding we have to offer, not just to international visitors, but to those in Canada too!

Fundraising, Accountability & Becoming a Registered Charity

There has been a lot of talk going around regarding a man named Myles MacDonald and his fundraising endeavours. Myles has a private foundation called ourwoundedwarriors.org he funds it from items he sells that he creates from art he has created. He also accepts donations from the general public.

Because his is a private foundation, there is no real accountability.
It's not illegal what he's doing, but it is questionable. The Legion is looking into his use of the poppy and there are many who are going after the man viscously because they believe him to be a user.
I spoke with the man, I was curious and wary because of the whole ourwoundedwarriors.org thing.

I'm not so sure the man is a con, or that he's doing anything wrong, but there's no way to prove that he's doing the good things he states unless you want to spend hours on the phone. It's easy to surmise he's doing something wrong just based on the name he chose to use. His way of doing things makes accountability tough and in the non profit and charity world, accountability is everything.

I've experienced people complaining about me and where do the funds I/we raise go, our non profit has never made a ton of money but when it has raised anything, the donations were given very publicly to ensure people knew we were helping out in our community.  Like the over $4K we raised for Kate MacEachern, we donated it to her at the Royal Canadian Legion in Leduc - in cash the day after our event at a public presentation and had pictures to prove it.  Some of the people we helped, like a man in southern Alberta 18 months ago or so, whose wife just recently passed - we were donated an electric scooter, she had need of it, we did the driving from Kamloops to Calgary to deliver it. We never made anything out of it, because he and his wife are private people, it just felt good to make a difference.

Right now we have a donation that just came in, the Jouse 2 controller one of those tools that allows people to use their breath to do many things for them when they are paralyzed and we have a lift for a handi-van that can be used for converting a van into a wheel chair accessible van to donate.
The veteran we had intended to support with it did not want it. We were $25,000 short in our fundraising efforts to build him a wheelchair accessible scooter and instead acquired this lift that is in amazing shape. Sadly, the veteran felt so deflated that he's all but quit talking to us.  It's a hard bitter pill to swallow when you can't make something a reality. That doesn't happen to me often, especially when I am working to help someone else.

We have made one huge project a reality and because of our hard work, the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association has just taken over the Afghanistan War Monument & Veterans Memorial Gardens Project here in Grande Prairie officially.

Our Peace Arch, memorials, monument and concrete pad and solar street lights are ALL 100% PAID FOR!  As project lead that is something I am very proud of.  Phase 1 of this enormous project is in the ground and paid for, on time and on budget!

Now that Veterans Affairs has accepted the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association as keeper of the project, we have registered and are waiting on approvals to become an Alberta Registered Charity. It does not give us CRA status, but what it does do is: ensure our board goes through a criminal record checks and helps the public feel better about supporting us because they will be able to find us on the Service Alberta Website as a Charity.  It means that our fundraising materials have been vetted and that we are "cleared" essentially to ask for people to donate.

It also helps us learn about governance and charitable reporting and helps us grow as we work towards CRA status.

It's not hard to register, but many organizations don't know that if they plan on hitting $25,000+ in donations that they need to be a registered charity business in Alberta.

It's $60 for the fee, some paperwork and you mail in the application. It takes about 3 weeks for the process.

We hope that our registered charitable status in Alberta is finalized around the end of the first week in February.

Raising money for charitable causes/projects is a big responsibility.

You need to make sure you do the reporting the way people want you to - like the donations we got from the Legion's Poppy Fund (several Legions contributed).  We were given $16,500 towards our monument project that needed to be paid to the monument maker in one lump sum to ensure that the Legion's knew their money went to the right place.

It is very important that one takes care of those things the way the donors ask and so...

This photo proves that we made one payment of $16,500 to Sunset Monument & Stone in Calgary.

Our donor, the Royal Canadian Legion's of northern Alberta (District 1) are happy, and so is our monument maker!

Our project has grown to involve more than gardens and points of interest, it will involve a small museum, a gift shop etc...

It will hopefully be completed by 2020-2021 and then we intend to enter the Communities in Bloom Contest for Memorial Gardens.  We are going to put our gardens and monument on the map and ensure that every veteran who rides WANTS to come to Grande Prairie to experience our little piece of sacred ground.

www.motorcycletourism.ca is our new website.
You can watch there for all kinds of things our organization has decided to become part of!

In the meantime, Community Futures, the Rider friendly Business Association and the  Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association are proud to present Canada's MOST Rider Friendly Contest - we are looking to find the community that treated the riding community the best last year. (2017)

Nominate your favourite community to ride to, to live in as a rider...

Have a great day everyone...

Finding Inspiration inside of anger ...

Sometimes I get inspired by the strangest things...
yesterday I found inspiration in anger of all things!

Charities - be they motorcycle events or not are the back bone of our social safety nets.
Many charities are being put in a position where they are being forced to pay for police overtime to host parades and awareness events as city and town budgets are stretched to the max.

After the article out of Olympia and having had my own experiences with police services as an event coordinator and as a member of the local toys for tots group - I was very, deeply angry. (My daughter and I - 22 years ago, were benefactors of a toy run and it's generosity - without them her 4th Christmas would have been - bleak to say the least)

I have been learning to focus on the outcomes I want.
So after a good cry, I asked myself the ONLY important question: HOW do we change this?

After all kinds of phone calls, research on the computer and letter writing I hit on something that if we can get community support for, I believe we can make work!

The idea is to train a bunch of riders in every community to become Professional Traffic Control people using their motorcycles for blocking traffic just like most of us do right now but we'd be certified by the province's transportation and safety departments. Just like crossing guards we would have CPR &  First Aide training, we'd be taught the Highway Traffic Act as it pertains to controlling traffic and we'd then - after a practical training session and a small written exam be certified.

I have been talking to various Safety Council's across the country and there is great interest from them so we shall see what we can do to put together a pilot project and if successful, we'd be able to reduce the costs of keeping people safe. This would free up the police services, reduce costs to everyone and there would be no more hassles. I have also put out inquiries about the cost for insurance and how we could deal with that.

You can help by going to your local charities, presenting them with the idea and getting letters of support from them. The more support we can garner the more likely we are to be successful in getting this project of the ground. We also want letters of support from the riding clubs and the more riding clubs that we can get to support this initiative the better!

The letters of support can be sent to the CMTA (Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association)
They can be sent to my office here in Grande Prairie and I will make sure they get to the right people!

The news is kind of flat again today - it is that time of year!
One story of note is about a group called CALM - Citizens Against Loud Motorcycles

Read the article folks - this noise stuff has become a cancer.
The only question we need to ask ourselves is HOW do we change the tide of anti motorcyclist sentiment. When we ask HOW can we do something the answers will come and we will be successful - the challenge is we need every motorcyclist possible asking themselves that question so that we can find the creative solutions.

One group in the states has signs made that are posted a few blocks before you enter hospital and nursing home areas . They also have them in their business and eating districts...

The signs ask motorcyclists to use respect with their throttle hand as people are sick, infirm or doing business. If we used that principal here - if we simply reminded people  that we need to live with others and share this world perhaps we could impact some of the wrong doers and or show offs. Like I said folks we need creative ideas! Put your thinking caps on and email me your ideas for a more peaceful and less contentious way of policing our own and stemming this flow of anger towards our community!

As always I welcome your feedback and differing opinions and ideas becasue it is through the sharing of ideas and discussion that we grow, evolve and become stronger as a community.

Join me on Face Book, in our forums on www.beltdrivebetty.com and/or right here in my blog - talk to me people!

Have a wonderful, creative thinking kind of day - I know mine will be...
Please if you are attending Christmas Parties, plan your way home in advance!
